Devereaux, the President of a large French financial group, is a powerful and self-assured man who leads a very active social life in Paris. A liberal, his political ambitions are only matched by his rough arrogance and an uncontrollable, voracious sexual appetite. He is addicted to prostitutes and uses them as leverage in official business. While in New York on business, Devereaux spends 12 hours in his hotel suite drinking champagne and doing drugs. Then after indulging in sexual intercourse with the maid, he is arrested for rape. His wife Simone, always faithful to her aging husband who acts like an irresponsible child, flies to New York to support him. She is well aware though that the case, whatever the outcome might be, will have ruined their lives.
