Synopsis
After her estranged, rabbi father dies in London, Ronit arrives for his funeral, coldly greeted by the Orthodox community that exiled her years before. Her childhood friend Dovid invites her to stay with him and his wife Esti, a teacher who is Ronit’s former best friend. Ronit is shocked to learn that her father left her childhood home to the synagogue, and she and Esti go there to get a few belongings. There, the two women share a tender kiss that becomes passionate, and later kiss again in public, where they are seen by two members of the congregation. The next day, a formal complaint is lodged against Esti at her school. The women escape to a hotel in central London and spend a day together. When Dovid confronts Esti with the shocking rumors about their relationship, the women are torn between love, religion and a need for freedom, and the three old friends struggle to find their place in a world where disobedience is the greatest sin of all. Based on the novel by Naomi Alderman.
